WHERE’S IT FROM?
HOOLIGANS
This is all down to a nineteenth century Irishman named Patrick Hooligan who was notorious for fighting — especially in bars. He was also incredibly strong — so strong that as a party trick he would lift four large men on to his back and then stagger across the bar-room floor. After a while, his reputation for fighting spread so far that bars — even bars he had never visited — would put up signs saying that Hooligan wouldn’t be served. Eventually, his name became an eponym — that is to say that any brawling man would be called a hooligan.
