The idea of promoting Annalise had been on her mind for a long time. She saw how Anna handled people when she needed to, and Veronica did need an assistant.
The job was taking a lot out of her, and she felt like it was a business decision that would not just help them individually, but also their relationship. Veronica felt like it was the right decision, especially since she did want to come forward about one another.
The whole mess with Georgie was long gone from her mind by the next day, and instead, her mind was filled with anticipation for the day ahead. She was excited, even though the entire day would be spent sitting in meetings.
Of course, these meetings came an early wake-up time, which wasn't what she wanted, but it was a business trip. At eight on the dot, they managed to walk into the first event of the day. It was a conference about how to build up connections.
Veronica looked around the room, seeing people looking at them with curious glances. She simply smiled, moving her body a bit and getting her laptop out.
Annalise seemed curious too, but Veronica could tell she was nervous. However, she did seem determined, with her gaze not wavering whatsoever as the event picked up. Veronica was proud of her, even though it all was quite confusing.
At the end of the first event, everyone cleared the room, and Annalise sighed.
“Wow. That was a lot of information,” Annalise said.
“It is, but did you understand it?” Veronica asked.
"I did. I didn't go to school for this, but in a sense, it seems easy. I'm not the best with people, but I want to try to get better," Annalise said.
“I guess that means we’ll continue to work together and get it right together,” Veronica said with a grin.
Annalise smiled back. They walked forward, heading to the next meeting. Before they did, Veronica stopped to get some coffee. When she did, a man walked over.
“Veronica?” he asked.
She turned around, seeing that it was David.
“Oh hello,” she said.
“I’m surprised that you’re here as well,” David said.
“I’m here because Bob couldn’t make it,” Veronica said.
"Oh, I see. Well, it was good to see you," David told her.
Annalise was watching the scene, and Veronica could tell that she was confused by the guy’s intent. Fortunately, Veronica knew what to do here.
“What did you want? I thought we already discussed our agreements earlier,” she said.
“We did. But, I wanted to know if you were free after the last panel of the day. I would love to get some dinner with you,” David said.
Veronica shook her head. “Sorry, but I’m with her,” she said.
David looked over at Annalise, surprised.
"Oh! I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to intrude then," he said.
“It’s fine. This is Annalise. She’ll be working with me as well very soon,” Veronica said.
Veronica was shaking with fear inside, especially since she just said those words, but her outer façade was that of confidence. David extended his hand, smiling.
“Hi there, I’m David.”
“Annalise. Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you as well. It seems like Veronica is quite happy with you,” he said.
“Thank you,” Annalise said.
"We should get going. The next panel starts in a couple of minutes," David said.
With those words, he scampered off, leaving Veronica with Annalise. Veronica then sighed.
“That was the first time I’ve ever told a professional acquaintance about you. That’s David. He’s been like that. He’s a nice guy, but I don’t think he got the hint until now,” Veronica said.
“Yeah, I could tell,” Annalise said with a chuckle.
“He’s a bit dense. But...that was also the first time I’ve ever told anyone about you. It feels nice, and while I am scared to tell others about you, I feel better,” Veronica said.
It did feel like a massive wave of relief rushed over her as she uttered those words. Annalise patted her back, holding her hand.
“We’ll get this. Trust me,” Annalise replied.
Veronica did trust her. She never knew how hard it was to trust another person until she met Annalise.
“It’s a bit of a weird mindset. In the past, I’ve only thought about my job, making sure I did everything right, but never about myself. You’ve changed that, Annalise, and I should thank you. It’s probably a healthier mindset as well,” Veronica explained.
"It is. But you don't have to tell everyone right away. Let's work on bettering ourselves too. Let's work on understanding who we are, and go from there," Annalise said.
Veronica looked at Annalise, listening to those words. It was then when a strange feeling washed over Veronica, a feeling that she wasn’t used to.
Was it love? She didn't know for sure. But it wasn't a bad feeling. It felt like warmth, a relieving warmth that she wanted more of.
“Thank you, Annalise. I’m glad I have you.”
The two of them walked to the next panel, standing close to one another and smiling. Veronica hadn't felt this happy about her job in a while. While she did love it, knowing that she had Annalise by her side, ready to aid her in whatever she needed, made Veronica feel good and ready for more.
