I grew up enjoying this uniquely South African sauce with steak. This is a derivation of the version my mother would make, and still does.
5 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 onion, finely chopped
2 tomatoes, peeled and grated
½ cup water
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
5 Tbsp tomato sauce
3 Tbsp peach chutney
2 Tbsp vinegar
1 tsp soya sauce (optional)
1 tsp crushed garlic
1 tsp crushed ginger
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1. Heat the oil in a saucepan and add the onion. Fry the onion until golden brown.
2. Add the tomatoes and simmer for about 15 minutes on medium heat.
3. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for about 30 minutes with the lid on.
4. Remove the lid and reduce on low heat until the sauce has the consistency of a thickish gravy.
5. Cook the steak to your liking and serve with the sauce.
Enough for 4 steaks
