Chapter Six

I don’t want to leave you,” Remington said.

His driver had just pulled up in her driveway and was waiting to escort him to the airport. He was dressed in the suit he had on when he showed up at Emory’s door three days ago.

He’d gotten up early this morning to chop wood (something he’d never done before, but he figured it out) and then he tended to the heater by putting more wood inside. He set a pot of water on top of it so hot water would be waiting for her when she woke up.

And now, he was leaving…

I’ll be okay, Remy. The power will be back on soon.”

I’m not talking about the power. I’m talking about you.”

She smiled and wrapped her arms around him tight. “It was a pleasure getting to know you.”

Likewise.” When they parted, he took a business card from his pocket and handed it to her. She read it:

Remington Lennox

CEO | Lennox Enterprises

She glanced up at him. The card had his phone number, fax number as well as his email address.

I meant what I said last night. I don’t want to walk away and never see you again. Call me.”

I will,” she said looking into his eyes.

Okay.”

He pulled in a worrisome breath and wrapped his arms around her. He didn’t like the sour feeling in the pit of his stomach – that nagging ache that he would never see her again. He hoped that wouldn’t be the case and he realized it didn’t have to be. He could come to visit her too but would prefer that she’d make the initial contact with him. That’s how he would know that she was okay with them visiting and seeing each other.

Call me if you need anything,” he told her.

I will.”

And stay warm.”

You, too.”

He loosened the grip he had on her. “Bye, Emmie.”

Bye, Remy.”

He turned to walk away from her feeling downright awful. He had good mind to tell his driver to come back tomorrow to give him one more day with her, but he was already here.

Emory stood at the door, watching as the driver got out of the black Denali SUV and opened the door for Remington to get inside. Before he did so, he looked back at the porch and waved at her for a final time. Then he got inside.

And just as fast as the winter storm blew him into her life, Remington Lennox was gone.
