Cut the back and sides of the cabinet to remove the pedestal under the cabinet box. Break off the toe-kick beneath the front of the cabinet.

Align the cabinets and screw their face frames together. The door you’ll use for the top provides a perfectly flat surface to set the cabinets on.

Screw a plywood base to the undersides of the cabinets and add a double 2x4 “strongback” to prevent the workbench from sagging in the middle.

Glue and screw a plywood back to the cabinets. The back strengthens the workbench and provides a fastener surface for shelves, hooks or other hardware.

Fasten the top with screws only—no glue. After years of wear, you can simply flip the top over to get a flawless new work surface.
