Part 4 Blended Learning: The Roadmap to Personalization

Introduction

In our work with schools, we are often asked by school leaders: How can you tell if it is working? In what ways can we see evidence of effective practice in the classroom? In this final part, as you proceed through Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the Blended Learning Roadmap, we share resources for assessing the effectiveness and impact of the program in a visible way. We discuss the milestones of each phase, take a “Dive into the Classroom” to see how it looks in action, and encourage you to be on the lookout for some common pitfalls.

The answer to these questions, however, goes beyond the scope of what can be seen and measured in a walk-through. Instead, it can be felt around the community. The real indicator of progress is the buzz of innovation evident in teachers trying new techniques, learning from each other, sharing valuable resources, and stretching beyond their understanding of the models. This extends to students trying new tools, learning from each other, sharing their creative endeavors, and stretching themselves beyond their own expectations. Personalization is not measured in data; it is experienced in how closely we understand our students as people. It cannot be achieved through technology alone.

In your journey through this book, you can see that we discussed technology and tools at length. However, the best use of technology in learning is to bring teachers and students closer together. As you continue through these next steps, do so with this long game in mind, considering not just how to observe and adjust through iterative practice, but also how to generate the buzz of innovation that continues to bring you closer to the target of personalization.
