Timing

With only 40 minutes, efficient use of time is critical. Divide your time as follows:

When You’re Running Out of Time

On the Writing test, you won’t be able to guess on the last few questions when you’re running out of time, as you can on the other tests. Thus, practice the timing carefully to avoid losing coherence toward the end. If you do start running out of time, don’t write a second body paragraph. Instead, take the time to write a thorough final body paragraph and a clear conclusion paragraph. The conclusion is a necessary component of your essay, and its exclusion will cost you more than a strong body paragraph will gain you. Even when you’re rushed, try to allow 1 to 2 minutes to proofread for errors that affect clarity.
