LIZARDFISH

Family Synodontidae

LIZARDFISH

Synodus saurus

The Lizardfish has a cylindrical body with a wide, slightly upturned head and a wide mouth absolutely jammed full of teeth. It has two dorsal fins, one very large, which it folds back against the body, the other tiny, and it grows to 40cm (1ft 4in) in length. It has a light tan and mottled brown appearance which helps its camouflage when it dives for cover into the sand. Ecology: It is common in shallow sandy areas where it hides under the sand. Quite often, all that is seen are the two eyes and the upturned mouth.
