Mullus surmuletus
This is the most commonly seen and recognized of the mullet. Sometimes referred to as Goatfish, the species is variable in colour and ranges from gold or orange with red blotches to pale cream and browns. It is also recognized by its striped dorsal fin and long, sloping head and fleshy lips. It grows to 40cm (1ft 4in). Ecology: It has twin fleshy barbels, which it uses in a sweeping motion to excavate in soft sand or mud in search of small worms and molluscs. Usually working in pairs or small groups, it is quite approachable and is highly prized as a food species.
