Lewis and Clark were the first white men to see this part of the country, and in many ways it has not changed since they moved through here some 200 years ago. Places remain where you can look out across an unspoiled vista that is much the same as it was when the Corps of Discovery pushed through the American West. Central Idaho is rugged and spectacular, and it is here that one of the most diverse hunting and fishing adventures in the country is offered by the Flying B Ranch.
Flying B Ranch is a hunting and fishing lodge near the town of Kamiah (Kam-e-i) in central Idaho. Whether high in the alpine lakes, or deep in the Nez Perce National Forest, there are over 740,000 acres of the most extraordinary and dramatic country North America has to offer.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Flying B is the sheer diversity of what an outdoorsman can pursue in this great wilderness. Unlike most lodges, Flying B offers both hunting and fishing opportunities. Depending on the time of year and the season, trout, salmon, steelhead, deer, turkey, bear, elk, cougar, and a wide variety of upland bird species are available to the hunting and fishing patron. Chukar, quail, huns, and pheasant are plentiful and if nothing else, watching the dogs of Flying B work is a joy to devoted upland hunters. Even in January, the coldest month of the year, booking a bird hunt is guaranteed to be a great experience since the snow cover is minimal and the temperature moderate.
The 14,000-square-foot log lodge is built in traditional western style and offers fourteen guest rooms and can house twenty guests at one time. A sauna, Jacuzzi, and other amenities are available to soothe the tired hunter. However, the grand finale of the day is the bountiful table.
A number of Flying B’s best game recipes use species native to the property. The recipes on the following pages are offered from the lodge kitchen and are reminiscent of country that still stirs the soul some 200 years after its discovery.
