Bali, Indonesia
Of one seldom seen.
—Polynesian proverb
Bali’s warm hospitality, Technicolor sunsets, and gorgeous beaches are a few of the many splendors that have earned Indonesia the name “Land of Smiles.” Another reason is its spectacular temples, and one of the most amazing and sacred is Pura Luhur Uluwatu. Facing southwest and perched on a cliff more than 200 feet above the Indian Ocean, Uluwatu (as it is known locally) is one of nine directional temples that protect the island from evil spirits. Built in the eleventh century, this Balinese sea temple is made of black coral.
If you yearn for a spiritual island getaway with your lover or your closest friend, travel to Bali and visit Uluwatu Temple. Fly into Bali Ngurah Rai Airport (Denpasar International Airport), 8 miles south of Denpasar in southern Bali. Tours are available, or reach the temple by auto, taxi, or motor scooter.
Join with your partner or friends in a meditation or devotional walk, envisioning or praying for a long and joyful relationship. Hold hands and watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean, stretching as far as the eye can see.
Every night, locals gather at Uluwatu Temple for kecak and fire communal dances, which begin at sunset and culminate in a ceremonial bonfire.
