¹ (Sir) Anthony Nutting (1920–99) resigned as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs on 31 October 1956 and as MP for Melton on 16 November (a week after this letter was written). Nutting, whose two elder brothers had been killed in the Second World War, was an advocate of United Nations peace-keeping both in the canal zone and internationally.
