Orchid

[ORCHIDACEAE]

The orchid stands for ecstasy.

Orchids seem to be glories from the underworld, their folds and openings, their intense scent almost too much for daylight. In the wild, they grow in the rainforests of the tropics, parasitical and peculiar, bearing beauty marks and brilliant spots, like hieroglyphics of desire.

There are over twenty-five thousand species of orchid, more than any other flower. Because of their strangeness, we have cast many names upon them: Adder’s Tongue, Ram’s Horn, Lady’s Slipper.
