Rosemary

[ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS]

Rosemary is for remembrance.

So said mad Ophelia, echoing the traditional meaning for this fragrant herb.

In England, rosemary was used in a spell to induce clairvoyant dreams. On the eve of St. Mary Magdalen, July 22, three young women, none of them yet twenty-one years old, might dip rosemary sprigs in a mixture of rum, wine, gin, vinegar, and water, then speaking no word, each drink three times, place the rosemary sprig between her breasts, and go to bed. The night would bring true dreams and a clear path for the future.

Anne of Cleves, marrying King Henry VIII, wore a crown of rosemary.
