The anemone suggests abandonment.
The goddess of love herself adored the boy Adonis, from whose blood, as he lay dying, the scarlet anemones sprang. So the Greeks believed. In the medieval Christian tradition, anemones were said to have grown on the hill beneath the cross where the blood of Christ had fallen.
Known as the windflower, the anemone flourishes in high, blustery terrain. The Greeks also spoke of it as the favorite of Zephyr, the god of the west wind. The hue of the anemone has “a purity,” D. H. Lawrence wrote, “that suggests condensed light.”
