Asters speak of the tiny beginnings from which all great things proceed.
Asters were said to originate when the goddess Virgo scattered some Stardust on the earth. Where it fell, asters sprang up. The name aster means star. Clusters of these small daisylike flowers with yellow centers reminded people of the night sky.
In Europe, asters have long been supposed to have magical powers. Their watchful and beneficial “eyes” could drive away evil spirits. An ointment made of asters was thought to cure the bite of a mad dog.
