The pomegranate stands for unspoken desire. Inside, its scarlet pips glow like rubies.
A native of Persia, the pomegranate has an ancient relationship with humanity. It appears in the sculpture of the oldest Western civilizations. The ancient Song of Songs mentions the pomegranate. Desirous, the lover goes to the orchard, to see if “the pomegranate trees are in flower.”
In the Chinese flower calendar, the pomegranate is the flower of June, a symbol of progeny and posterity. In the Victorian flower language, pomegranates indicated “foolishness.”
