Dependent in the household of al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Ḥasan, vizier to the caliph al-Muqtadir

روت عن أبي بكر الحسن بن عليّ بن أحمد بن بشّار بن العلاّف الشاعر شيئًا من شعره. روى عنها أبو عبد الله محمّد بن المعلّى الأزديّ البصريّ في أماليه.

She is the source for some of the verse of the poet Abū Bakr al-Ḥasan ibn al-ʿAllāf,¹⁰⁷ and Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn al-Muʿallā transmits from her in his Dictations.

قرأت على الحافظ أبي عبد الله البغداديّ عن ذاكر بن كامل الحذّاء عن أبي نصر محمود بن فضل الإصبهانيّ قال أخبرنا أبو القاسم عليّ بن حسين الربَعيّ أخبرنا أبو الحسن الماورديّ حدّثنا أبو عبد الله محمّد بن المعلّى إملاءً قال أنشدتنا قبيحة مولاة العبّاس بن الحسن قالت أنشدنا أبو بكر العلّاف البغداديّ لنفسه [خفيف]

قُلْ لـِمَنْ يُبْرِمُ ٱلْـمَرِيضَ فَلَوْ عُدْ	تَ صَحِيحًا لَعَادَ ذَاكَ مَرِيضَا١
لَا تُطِلْ عِنْدَهُ ٱلْجُلُوسَ فَيَزْدَا	دَ طَوِيلًا مِنْ ٱلسَّقَامِ عَرِيضَا
قُلْ لَهُ كَيْفَ أَنْتَ وَٱدْعُ لَهُ اللّـٰ	ـهَ وَعَجِّلْ عَنِ ٱلْعَلِيلِ ٱلنُّهُوضَا
فَإِذَا كَانَ مَنْ يَعُودُ مُطِيلًا	لَمْ يَكُنْ عَائِدًا وَكَانَ بَغِيضَا

I read with master Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Baghdādī—who cited Dhākir ibn Kāmil the shoemaker, who cited Abū Naṣr Maḥmūd ibn Faḍl al-Iṣfahānī as saying: it was related to us by Abū l-Qāsim al-Rabaʿī, who was informed by the supreme judge Abū l-Ḥasan al-Māwardī, citing Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn al-Muʿallā in dictation—that Qabīḥah quoted this poem, which she heard from Abū Bakr al-Ḥasan ibn al-ʿAllāf himself:

Tell the one who bores the sick:

“If you visited a healthy man, you’d make him ill.”

Do not sit long with him,

or his disease will lengthen and spread.

Just say hello and wish him well

and quickly leave the sufferer.

Visitors who overstay

aren’t well-wishers, just insufferable.

أنبأني محمّد بن عبد الواحد الهاشميّ عن أبي محمّد عبد الله^١ قال أخبرنا المبارك بن عبد الجبّار إذنًا قال أخبرني أقضى القضاة أبو الحسن عليّ البصريّ قراءة عليه حدّثنا أبو عبد الله محمّد بن المعلّى بن عبد الله الأزديّ إملاءً قال أنشدتنا قبيحة مولاة العبّاس بن الحسن قالت أنشدنا أبو بكر بن العلّاف لنفسه [متقارب]

كَأَنَّكَ بِٱلْـمَصْرَعِ ٱلْكَائِنِ	وَجِسْمُكَ فِي صُورَةِ ٱلْبَائِنِ
وَقَدْ صِرْتَ فِي أَمَلٍ خَادِعٍ	كَذُوبٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ حَائِنِ
وَقَامَ ٱلَّذِي صُنْتَهُ بُرْهَةً	يَحُثُّ عَلَى نُقْلَةِ ٱلصَّائِنِ
فَمِنْ نَاقِلِيـنَ إِلَى غَاسِلٍ	إِلَى حَامِلِيـنَ إِلَى دَافِنِ
فَلَمَّا ٱرْتُهِنْتَ بِدَارِ ٱلْبِلَى	حَصَلْتَ عَلَى ٱلْعَمَلِ ٱلرَّاهِنِ
وَقَدْ كُنْتَ تَسْكُنُ فِي ظَاهِرٍ	فَأَصْبَحْتَ تَسْكُنُ فِي بَاطِنِ
سَتَتْرُكُ بَيْتًا وَثِيقَ ٱلْبِنَاءِ	إِلَى بَيْتِكَ ٱلْـمُظْلَمِ ٱلْوَاهِنِ
وَدَارًا يَعِيشُ بِهَا ٱلسَّاكِنُونَ	إِلَى مَنْزِلٍ مَيِّتِ ٱلسَّاكِنِ
فَلَا يَغْبِنَـنَّ٢ امْرُؤٌ نَفْسَهُ	فَوَيْلٌ مِنَ ٱلْغَبْـنِ لِلْغَابِنِ

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid the Hāshimī related to me—citing Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Khashshāb,¹⁰⁸ citing al-Mubārak ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Ṣayrafī, who cited, with permission, the supreme judge Abū l-Ḥasan al-Māwardī, who quoted Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn al-Muʿallā in dictation—saying that Qabīḥah quoted this poem which she heard from Abū Bakr al-Ḥasan ibn al-ʿAllāf:

It is as though you are in death’s throes

your body about to depart.

Sped to your appointed time

after hopes false and deceptive.

Those you once protected

urge you now begone:

From hearse-bearers to corpse-washer

to pall-bearers, to the one who lays you in the grave.

Mortgaged to the House of Decay,

you gained a fleeting bargain.

You used to dwell, seen, above ground

now you dwell unseen beneath it.

You leave a sturdy house

for a dark, decrepit abode,

A house with living inmates,

for a house of the dead.

Let no man deceive himself:

woe to the self-deceived!
