أخذها من يحيى بن خالد البرمكيّ وكانت بديعة الجمال ظاهرة الكمال فحظيت عنده وأقامت^١ معه ثلاث سنين ثمّ ماتت فوجد عليها وجدًا شديدًا ثمّ قال يرثيها [سريع]

قَدْ قُلْتُ لَمَّا ضَمَّنُوكِ ٱلثَّرَى	وَجَالَتِ ٱلْحَسْرَةُ فِي صَدْرِي
اِذْهَبْ فَلَا وَٱللهِ مَا سَرَّنـِي	بَعْدَكِ شَيْءٌ آخِرَ الدَّهْرِ

ورثاها العبّاس بن الأحنف بأربعين بيتًا فأمر له الرشيد بأربعين ألف درهم لكلّ بيت ألف درهم وكانت وفاتها في سنة ثلاث وسبعين ومائة.

Al-Rashīd got her from Yaḥyā ibn Khālid the Barmakid. She was extraordinarily lovely and accomplished. She enjoyed al-Rashīd’s favor until her death three years later. In his great sorrow he wrote the following elegy:

When they laid you in earth

my breast was racked with grief.

I said to myself, “Die—

there’s no more joy in life!”

Al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Aḥnaf composed a forty-line elegy on Haylānah, for which al-Rashīd gave him forty thousand dirhams—a thousand for each line.²²

She died in the year 173 [789–90].
