The night was cool enough that I could see my breath in the air on the way over. That's what I knew Lou and Dante were seeing when they looked out the window. They were going to see people getting out of SUVs and trucks, armed with high-powered rifles. They were going to see steam rising from the ground and watch as they made their way up the driveway and across the neat little stone path and to the porch. For a second, I thought that I might stay. But Artie was already pulling me towards the back door as Celia led the way. Miss Maricel kept pace with Artie, one hand wrapped around his bicep.
Miss Maricel was whispering to Artie, something that I couldn't quite catch. I stopped a second before Celia had her hand on the doorknob and reached around Artie and pulled her back by her shirt.
I shook my head when Celia looked over at me. I pushed Miss Maricel, Artie, and Celia back behind me and open the door.
There was one of the Ascendancy there, with a gun pointed in my face.
When I looked at the man behind the gun, he gave me a grin.
The door was jerked from my grasp and it slammed shut in his face. I looked over my shoulder but I didn't know if it was Artie or Miss Maricel.
At the front of the house, I heard Lou answer the door.
I looked up to Celia first, unsure of where we should go. There was no doubt in my mind that the house was surrounded and that every single person there had guns with cinder bullets with them.
"We might as well join the boys," Miss Maricel said.
