TRANSLATOR’S NOTE

THE most recent edition of the Greek text of Xenophon’s Expedition of Cyrus is the 1998 revision by John Dillery of Carleton L. Brownson’s old Loeb. I have used this as my primary text for this translation, though I have also consulted the fuller apparatuses of the Oxford Classical Text, the Budé and the Teubner editions. Those few places where I differ from Brownson/Dillery have been marked in the text with an obelus. An asterisk indicates a note in the Explanatory Notes.

The tripartite references to the text in the Introduction and Explanatory Notes are to book, chapter (numbered in square brackets in the translation), and section divisions within the original Greek text. They also appear in the running headlines.
