Meat substitutes

Living without meat, does not mean you have to miss out on the flavors and textures you are used to. Below is a list of meat-like products that have been used for hundreds, if not thousands of years all around the world.

Tofu is one that everybody has heard of. Chances are that most of you have actually tried tofu before. It comes in many forms, but the most readily found are soft and firm tofu. It can be prepared in so many different ways. Adding it to a meal as an ingredient is nice, but also making it a featured dish works as well. Throwing some soft tofu in the blender with your smoothies will make them creamier and replace the yogurt you normally would have put in there. Tofu is high in protein, calcium and magnesium.

Tempeh is another soy product, and originates in Indonesia. It is different from tofu, as the beans are used in the final product. This gives it a meatier texture than tofu. It carries the same health benefits as tofu, with a little extra protein, fiber and vitamins available.

Mushrooms have long been preferred as a meat substitute. With over a hundred different types of edible mushrooms available, your choices of flavor and texture are vast. Mushrooms are high in fiber and protein. They can be fried, baked, boiled, grilled or eaten raw.

There are countless meat-free options at your local grocery store. Veggie burgers come in all flavors and types. Fake turkey and duck can be purchased. Hotdogs can be found without meat. You can buy bacon that does not come from a pig. You will have such fun learning about, purchasing and cooking with the many options available for vegan eaters.
