Bringing Back Mudcrutch
As another year passed, Petty regrouped his original band Mudcrutch. He and fellow band mates worked together to record their first self-titled album. After 30 years spent focusing on solely himself and the Heartbreakers, Petty reopened where the Heartbreakers had originally came from. The group consisted of Petty, Benmont Trench and Mike Campbell from the Heartbreakers and, two others that they had hoped to rekindle with. Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon. They were able to reconnect and reminisce on old times they shared together while making music about those times. The album was released in the Spring of ’08 and earned a #8 spot on the charts. They only did a short tour in California to promote the album but, were more focused on the fun they had creating it. Petty enjoyed reconnecting with people that he had once worked so closely with.
Aside from Petty working again with the Heartbreakers to produce a record-breaking album he, Campbell, and Trench also reconnected again with fellow Mudcrutch members to create their second album titled, Mudcrutch 2. Petty and the rest of Mudcrutch had enjoyed working on their first album so much that they wanted to do it again just for the experience of working together, singing about their beloved past times. Although, they feared being able to top an original album like their first, they managed to put that fear aside and decided to go ahead and do a second because they had enjoyed the first so much. The group was more concentrated on having fun with it rather than worrying about whether or not it made the Billboard charts. Like it’s predecessor the album wasn’t meant to be flashy or over the top but rather low key and laid back. They achieved their goal and released their second self-titled album in May of 2016.
