CANDLE MOLDS 201

WHY DIY CANDLE MOLDS?

Make a mold, make it personal.
Right again, Stella. As with every craft, personal designs bring it to the next level.
Gifts, gifts, gifts!
So easy to make a mold, so special to receive a custom, one-of-a-kind candle.
Save money.
Stella reminded us how much money we spent on premade candle molds after our “Intro to Candle Molds” workshop last summer. I wonder if she knows that Flo bought four different dog figures, plus all of those flower designs. Ha-ha! I only bought seven, and I’ve already used four.
Note: ask Flo if she’ll lend me the sleeping-hound mold. So cute.

IDEAS FOR MOLDS

Cast the Lego structure that little Billy made for me. Make one for him and a couple for his teachers as holiday gifts.
My old, bronzed bootie. I owe Stella’s friend, Emily, a baby gift. She’ll love it. And she’ll need a treat after running the Frank Marshall party. What a group!
Stella made a mold out of her teeth from before she got braces. Wonder if she’d like a mold of my dentures. Tell Flo.

SILICONE MOLDS ARE STURDY, EASY TO MAKE, AND LONG LASTING

Stella says there are kits we can buy to cast an item into a silicone mold.
Fast drying, plus not as smelly as the solution we’re going to make in class

Making a silicone solution from scratch.
Pros: Can be cheaper than a kit if we like making molds and plan to design many.
Cons: Smelly. Need to mix in a well-ventilated area or with a mask.

NO SILICONE? EASY PILLAR CANDLE MOLD HACK

Use an existing cardboard-type container that is wax-lined for a mold—can be from snacks, takeout food, milk cartons, etc. Pour the wax directly into these items. When the candle hardens, peel off the container. Done! Add the personal touch through fragrance and color choices.
