A Crystal for Every
Season: Fluorite

Charlie Rainbow Wolf

Ostara is the second festival of the spring, and occurs at the Spring Equinox, when the days and nights are of equal length. It’s a time of balance and focus, of new beginnings and fertility. Many different traditions have a sacred festival at this time of year, including—but not limited to—Pagan, Christian, Wiccan, Hindu, Sikh, and Jewish traditions. It’s named after the goddess Ostara, who represents the dawn light. It stands to reason, then, that the crystals associated with this festival reflect the light, balance, and fertility that it brings.

Some of the more popular and easily obtainable stones include amazonite, chrysoprase, fluorite, garnet, jasper, lapis, and rose quartz. You could also include agate in this, provided that you chose it carefully. Both agate and quartz come in such a wide variety that it’s usually easy and fairly inexpensive to choose a suitable stone from these categories.

Fluorite

My top choice for an Ostara stone has to be fluorite. With its myriad of translucent hues and frequent bands of color, it always seems such a positive stone, oozing with potential. Fluorite is predominantly four colors—blue, purple, gold, and white—although pink, green, and even black are not uncommon. They’re all translucent, and sometimes the different shades are found blended together in the same stone.

The molecular structure of fluorite is one of a nearly equal balance of calcium and fluorine. With a hardness of only four, it’s not a particularly robust stone. It scratches easily, so care must be taken—particularly if you’ve got it in a bowl of tumbled stones—that you don’t mar the surface. Fluorite is cut and polished into many different shapes, including spheres, merkabas, pyramids, and more. Polishing brings out the color and depth in the stone, although raw crystals may also be used in meditation, healing, and ceremony.

It doesn’t matter what hue you choose for your Ostara festivities. All fluorites are said to be protective and useful when it comes to grounding energy and stabilizing the spirit. They’re cleansing and creative in nature, and many healers use them for clearing out negative energy and restoring balance. It’s believed by those who work with this stone that it has the potential to increase intuition, promote inspiration and new ideas, and assist in connecting with spirit guides or the higher self. The different shades add subtle nuances to these qualities, so choose the appropriate color to go with the theme of your ritual or celebration. Fluorite is of particular use if you’re conducting your ceremony or connecting with others online, as it is said to benefit those who work with technology.

Blue

Blue fluorite comes in many shades, from the palest of ice blues to a faded denim hue, to almost turquoise, into a lilac that’s nearly purple. It’s a throat chakra stone, said to promote honesty and clarity, and to help you to release any karmic residue that may be holding you back from being everything you have the potential to be. Choose this stone when your main concerns are communicating, visualizing what you want, or calming nervous energy. If you’re trying to break a habit or let go of an attachment from the past, or if you desire to commune with any of your guides and spirit helpers, blue fluorite is your friend.

Gold or Yellow

Select this stone when you need to focus and clear your mind. If you have an idea you’re hoping to execute, gold fluorite will assist the logical and reasoning side of your brain to align your actions with your intent so that your plans are successful. It’s a solar plexus chakra stone, and resonates with your willpower and integrity. If you practice any form of divination, this stone might help you find a lost or missing object, or at least bring you the clarity to get some idea where it could be. If your emotions are jangled, working with yellow or gold fluorite has the potential to calm your nerves and bring a sense of peace. It also helps you to see things from a different angle, which is always a good thing.

Purple

Many healers believe this to be the most soothing of all the fluorites, and there’s a part of me that agrees. I’ve got a beautiful fluorite necklace made of irregularly shaped tumbled stones, striped with shades of purple and cyan. It may be mind over matter, but when I wear it, I feel less stressed somehow. It’s a third eye chakra stone that helps you not just see new ideas clearly, but also assists you when it comes to cutting through the illusions to find the truth in what you experience. If you’re seeking to heighten your intuition or unlock latent psychic talents, this is the stone to use.

White

White fluorite ranges from nearly clear to nearly opaque. It’s a crown chakra stone, and if you work with spirit helpers it will help you to contact their purity and wisdom. Its energy is gentle yet strong, and works with you when you need to nurture compassion and understanding without turning into an enabler or a doormat. If your goal is to bring clarity, purity, and focus into things, then white fluorite is an excellent ally to have with you. Crystal healers believe that wearing white fluorite will repel electromagnetic energy, as well as help to prevent you from psychic attack or other maliciousness.

Other Fluorites

This stone is also found in shades of black, green, and pink, sometimes found together in the same stone. The green echoes growth and progress, bringing a new and fresh energy with it. Green is the color of the heart chakra, and helps you to work through past hurts, attachment issues, or addiction. Pink is also a heart chakra color, with a positive and soothing energy. It is the color of universal love, not the love that is borne of ego, but the unconditional love that comes with compassion, understanding, and acceptance. Fluorite is also found in the darkest of colors, so dark that it looks translucent black. Black is grounding, a root chakra color, and this stone helps with those things too. Healers use it to cleanse the aura and balance energy.
