* An experienced ‘political’, Durand was acting Governor-General’s Agent for Central India at the outbreak of the mutiny. Forced to leave Indore when Holkar’s troops mutinied in July 1857, he joined Brigadier Stuart’s column of Bombay troops and helped to crush the rebellion in Malwa. In December, shortly after returning to Indore, he relinquished the agency to Sir Robert Hamilton, who was back from leave.
