His elder brother, Major Charles Gough, also received the VC during the Indian mutiny. Among the deeds mentioned in the citation was saving Hugh Gough’s life at Khurkowdah in August 1857. Charles’s son, Major John Gough, was awarded the same medal in Somaliland in 1903, making the Goughs the only family to win three VCs.
