In the eighteenth century, chic French chairs came in a parade of well-documented shapes and unlikely sizes worthy of standing ovations. Making a grand entrance is a pair of Louis XIV fauteuils fashionably dressed in an early tapestry. Once, a chair with a high back was called a chaire à bras, and fauteuils referred to armchairs with low backs.
