Hey, I wrote another one! The Beast of Rose Valley seemed easy because I was too naive to know how hard it was supposed to be, but The Kraken of Cape Madre made sure to remind me that writing a book is hard work with a lot of ups and downs. Like before, I have to first and foremost thank the team at Evolved Publishing for getting this out the door. Hats off again to Mike Robinson, Richard Tran, and Dave Lane (aka Lane Diamond).
I’d also like to thank my critique partner, Mistie. Her insight into the story every two weeks provided motivation for me soldier through to finish the book in record time. By the end, it felt like Mistie knew my characters as well as I did. There’s nothing quite as humbling as the note “that doesn’t sound like Miriam” and realizing it’s right.
Thanks also to my beta readers: Amanda for her insightful critiques and genuine love of Miriam. Steve for making sure I didn’t focus too much on inconsequential things (and for coining the term “squidnapping” which I desperately wanted to fit in the book somewhere, but never did). Also to Ben, who took his beta-reading assignment to the next level by actually printing out the entire manuscript, putting it in a binder, and painstakingly writing out his comments by hand. And to Rachael, whose keen eye fixed up a lot of easy-to-miss typos and missing words.
And, of course, I have to thank my wife, Akaemi. Without her, I wouldn’t be chasing down this crazy dream. Not only has she been my stalwart champion, but she also reads everything I write and helps to make it better in every way.
It may have been harder to write The Kraken of Cape Madre, but it was also more rewarding, and I’m grateful every day that I’ve been given the opportunity to spend my time hunting beasts and chasing krakens.
