THE NAME OF UTTANASANA comes from the particle ‘ut’ (intensity) and the verb ‘tan’ (to lengthen, to stretch, to enhance). This asana is the simplest analog of inverted asanas, and it has a similar effect on the body.
People to whom practicing Shirshasana or other inverted poses is contraindicated for some reasons, can safely perform Uttanasana as a possible alternative. Like any other leaning forward, it can be used as an asana compensating leaning back.
