The ride to his townhouse was a quiet one. He wasn’t saying another word; he didn’t want to tick her off any further. Davis was grateful that she was driving him home and he didn’t have to take the bus.

Davis used the time to try to figure out his next move. He needed to make sure that he and Ansley were good. He was frustrated for the way he behaved. He had overreacted in response to her question.

She navigated her car his driveway and parked. The silence between them was thicker than morning fog.

“I’m sorry,” Davis stated. “The last thing I wanted to do was ruin this day for you.”

Ansley took a calming breath. “I got what I needed and wanted out of today because I went to my favorite places, but this is on an indefinite pause. Maybe we could be friends somewhere in the future, when I can laugh about this but that day is not today.”

“Pause, as in you want me to back off?” Davis questioned.

“Instead of trying to decipher what I mean by pause, you need to be calling Simeon and apologizing to her. What you did to her was wrong? You toyed with her heart and it really messed her up.”

“I don’t want to mess this up. That’s what I care about right now,” he responded. “We will talk about everything, but for right now… can we table this?”

“I’m not one for drama either,” she told him. “I guess we can discuss later, but we can’t ignore this. The three of us will have to come together on this. Simeon really likes you, and I get it. The thought of you two sleeping together, it’s against girl code that I’m even here with you right now. Regardless of my plan to jack with your emotions.”

“You’re right and I’m sorry Ansley.” He squeezed her hand. Davis looked out the front window. “Did you want to come in so we can talk some more?”

Ansley shook her head. He released a harsh breath. “I figured as much.” He tapped his fingers on the dashboard before opening the car door. “I know this is a stretch, considering, but can I have a parting kiss?”

She rolled her eyes, but couldn’t help but smile, he knew that meant she wanted to let him but just couldn’t allow it to happen.

Davis leaned across the seat and kissed her on the cheek before stepping out of the car and walking into the house.

He hadn’t managed to smooth things out with Ansley, but he could tell it wouldn’t be hard to get back in her good graces. She appeared to be dissolving right there in front of him. He had a bigger dilemma to tackle—Simeon. He had to give her what she wanted without letting on that he was still going after Ansley. There was something about her that threw him off of his game, and for once in his life, he wasn’t afraid to allow love into his life again.

He gave a bitter laugh. For once he found a woman that makes him want to act right, and it happens to be the friend of a fling. He spat a string of expletives, slamming his fist into the door.

“Whoa. You act a fool at your own place,” Beau growled. Then laughed heartily. “That is if you can ever afford a place of your own.”

“Whatever man.”

“I’m gonna let you slide only cause you did what I asked, and you managed to not attract attention. That’s what I like to see playa. Now about them pills, we might be able to work that out but if you digging the chick you might not want to steal from her.”

“Nah, we just kicking it. What you find out?”

“Gotcha. Well, dude, she might be bipolar so you can’t be juking her around. You remember Aunt Catherine was bipolar and she wasn’t on medication. Nah, don’t take nothing off this broad.”

“Since when you got some morals,” Davis joked.

“Aye man, I do have some standards. Now run me that money,” Beau said with his hand extended.
