Chapter Two

Intention

The purpose of this book is to show how three spiritual traditions have created a melody in my life. This melody has addressed the particular challenges I have faced as a recovering addict. For simplicity’s sake, I am ascribing a particular emphasis to each tradition. Twelve-step meetings taught me to listen. Yoga poses taught me to feel. Meditation taught me to see. In this chapter, we will listen, feel, and see into the wholehearted, purpose-driven behavior captured by the term wise intention. What is the difference between being for, as opposed to against? What obstacles do we face when we attempt to give our all to something? What happens when we bring an unconflicted mind to bear on the matter at hand?

At one of my first meetings, I heard that Roy Rogers told his children to “believe in what you do and do it.” This chapter concerns our ability to believe in what we do and do it.
