The Buddha sat in meditation in an effort to understand himself. He noticed that certain mind states led to suffering. He noticed that other mind states led to well-being. This understanding became known as wise view. Having understood what leads to suffering, having understood what leads to well-being, he made it his business to cultivate the mind states that lead to well-being. This decision became known as wise intention.

There is a moment in our recovery when we abandon the concept of being against anything in favor of being for something. This moment is when we come to understand the value of wise intention.

Reflection

Consider the word wholehearted. Imagine the healing that must have taken place for an addict to be clean, sober, and wholeheartedly engaged in life. To live this way is the intention of recovery. Are you on board?
