The Buddha sat in meditation in an effort to understand himself. He noticed that certain behaviors led to a harmonious existence. He noticed that other behaviors led to suffering. Having understood this, it became his intention to abstain from the behaviors that led to suffering. Having understood this, it became his intention to practice the behaviors that led to a harmonious existence. This decision became known as sila.

There is a moment in our recovery when we realize that true ambition is the desire to live usefully and walk humbly in harmony with all beings. It is at this point that we come to understand the true meaning of the ancient concept of sila.
