Author’s Note to Second Edition
This second edition of old trades, titles and occupations contains over one thousand new entries. Some entries that appeared in the first edition have been revised if new or alternative meanings have come to light. In addition, dates have been given in some cases as guidance as to when the term was in use, though it should be remembered that in some areas, at least, certain titles would be in use long before or after that quoted.
A number of foreign terms which were once in common usage by the English speaking nations have been included as these were either invented, absorbed, retained, or used by British colonials both when abroad and at home. In response to requests, a selection of criminal titles has also been included from both sides of the Atlantic. Acknowledgement is given to the excellent publication, Dictionary of American Underworld Lingo, Editor in Chief, H. E. Goldin – Constable & Co Ltd, London, 1950, which is an invaluable reference source for those wishing to study this aspect of the subject in extended detail.
Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to all those who have contacted me with suggestions and additions for this second edition.
