Jim Marshall’s photographs represent what music means to me. The way he shot these people is the way I hear these people . . . I don’t know that you could even say Jim was performing, but he was with them. When you look at the shot of coltrane and wes montgomery performing together at Monterey, Jim is not separate; Jim is with them. Jim is part of it.
