Chapter 44

I hear the shot ring out as I am running around the side of the desk.  I had a feeling that Anthony was outside the door waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger.  I run out the door when I hear the man that was holding me hostage hit the floor.  I run right into Anthony’s arms and a swarm of cops pass us in the hallway and enter his office where I was being held hostage.

Anthony pulls me into the kitchen where my whole night fell to pieces.  The next while is a blur.  I remember being assessed by an EMT and then all of Anthony’s cop friends coming over to check on us.  Then, a cop took my statement and I finally got a ride to the hospital.

At the hospital they take all of my clothes away from me and put them into evidence bags.  A female cop oversees the examination and questioning of what all the man did to me.  Thankfully I had found the letter opener and stabbed him in the leg before he dropped my pants and raped me.  She commends me for how brave I was tonight, I don’t know if I was brave or just tired of being a victim.  We finally leave the hospital after getting a clean bill of health for both me and the baby.  I had a bit of high blood pressure for a while, but once the adrenaline went out of my system the blood pressure went back to normal.  I had a small scratch on my neck where the man had placed the knife, but nothing serious.

We go from the hospital to the police station to go over my statement from earlier and have me sign a copy of it.  By the time we are done I am completely exhausted and ready for bed.  It’s almost five in the morning.  I really don’t know what happened to the man except that he was hit with a bullet, where is a mystery.  The police don’t say anything about having to testify in court, so I figure that he didn’t make it out of the study alive.  Either my stab wound hit an artery and he bled out or the shot that whizzed by my head hit somewhere not compatible with life.

We finally head home and I see Chris passed out on our couch.  Luke is awake and sitting at the kitchen counter eating cereal and watching cartoons on the television while Chris snores.  Anthony and I just laugh at the site of the two of them.  Luke jumps down from the stool and comes over and hugs both me and Anthony.

“Where were you at mom and dad?”  He asks us.

“We had something happen late last night and had to stop by the police station.  You’re momma is tired, so let’s give her some time to rest before we bother her.”  Anthony answers for us.

“Okay.  Nighty night momma.”  Luke says as he gives me another hug and I turn to the master bedroom to hit the sack and sleep for the next twelve hours or until I wake up.
