In this project, you’re going to repeat a motif in your painting to add depth and complexity to a visual story. I love using this technique and return to it again and again in my work. I find that people really enjoy finding elements that echo the same theme as they look at my paintings. They also enjoy pointing out these thematic elements to their friends if the paintings hang in their homes or a gallery. As you practice this technique, make it a challenge to think of how many ways you can visually represent the same idea. It’s fun and it draws people into your work. In this project, you’ll be using the theme of love and weaving it into a nautical painting. Photos of boat hulls that you can use as collage elements for your boat can be found at artistsnetwork.com/storytelling-art-studio-book-elements. Use these or take your own maritime photos and incorporate them into your ship design.

“There was a hint of spring in her sole green eyes, something summery in her complexion, and a rich autumn ripeness in her walk.”
