Spearhead Hair Cushion

This shape of this hair cushion comes from the tutorials found in Plocacosmos [17] and the print found in Encyclopédie Méthodique, ou par Ordre de Matières; par une Société de Gens de Lettres, de Savans et d’Artistes. [18] It’s not really meant to shape the hair too much, but help keep it up and also gives you something to pin your hats or caps on to.

1 foot (30 cm) square wool knit that matches the hair color

#30 silk thread

Cork, horsehair, wool roving or other stuffing material

1. Cut out the pieces according to the pattern.

2. Pin the small pleats of the top piece.

3. With right sides together, pin and stitch the top triangle to the bottom triangle using a backstitch. Leave a 1-inch (2.5-cm) hole in the middle of one side.

4. Turn the pieces right side out, then stuff the cushion with your filler of choice (we used cork), and whip the opening closed.

5. It may not look like much, but this little triangle is enough to keep your hair fashionably full and prevent your hat or bonnet from crushing it flat. See here to see this cushion in use.
