Dolly’s Tea Party
Recommended age group: 4–6

SETTING THE SCENE
This is a wonderful theme for your guests, who get to don their mums’ finery and have their favourite baby doll accompany them to this special event!
- * Tie white and yellow daisies with yellow and orange curling ribbon and attach to the front gate with yellow and orange balloons. Scatter petals or flowers from the gate to the front door. (Note: Should fresh flowers be unavailable, use artificial or tissue flowers throughout this theme.)
- * Cover the table with yellow crepe paper and use a white lace or yellow tulle overlay. Arrange yellow and white daisies in teapots and place on the table and in the party area. Scatter petals and/or flowers on the floor around the party table. Create a canopy above the table by draping yellow and orange streamers from the centre of the ceiling to the edges. Tie yellow and orange balloons with curling ribbon and attach to the corners of the party area. Suspend yellow and orange ribbons from the ceiling and attach flowers and butterflies (available at craft shops) to the ends of the ribbons.
- * Draw daisies on cardboard, paint with craft spray, decorate with glitter, cut out and attach to the walls in the party area. (Use the template on page 165 if preferred.)
- * Set a place for each child with plastic teacups and saucers. Attach a large yellow tulle bow to the back of each chair. Write the guest’s name on yellow board paper, decorate with glitter, punch a hole in one corner and attach to the bow with yellow curling ribbon. The children can take these home.
- * Make placemats from cardboard using the daisy template (page 165). Colour with non-toxic craft paint.
- * Cover a cardboard box with yellow crepe paper or paint with craft spray and decorate with flowers, ribbons, balloons and glitter. Fill with dressing-up clothes in case some of the children don’t arrive in costume. You can also add accessories such as gloves, high-heeled shoes, hats and so on.
- * Set aside a changing table for the dolls. Place small containers of baby talc (use under supervision) and baby lotion on the table. Be sure to include disposable baby doll diapers.
- * Use all the doll accessories that you have and borrow extras from friends. These should include prams, beds, feeding chairs, clothes, and so on. Make another box in the same manner as the one described above, and use this for the dolls’ clothes.

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES
Apart from the following games, allow free time for playing with the dolls.
Arrange the Flowers
- YOU WILL NEED (PER TEAM):
- 1 × large piece of cardboard with a drawing of a vase and stems protruding*
- 1 × felt-tip marker
- Divide the children into two or more teams. Have the children stand in a line, one behind the other, and give the child in front a felt-tip marker.
- On starter’s orders, the child in front must run to the poster, draw a daisy at the end of one of the stems, then run back to the team and hand the pen to the next child in line. The game continues in the same manner until there is a winning team. The winners receive a prize, the rest receive tokens.
- * One stem per team member.
Pass the Teapot
This game may be played at the table.
- YOU WILL NEED:
- 1 × plastic teapot
- Numbered pieces of paper (as per the number of guests)
- Music
- 1 × basket containing numbered prizes (as per the number of guests)
- Place the numbered paper squares in the teapot and have the children sit in a circle. Start the music and let the children pass the teapot from one to the other. When the music stops, the child who is holding the teapot chooses a number from the pot. She then picks a prize with the corresponding number from the basket. When a child has won a prize, she is eliminated from the game.
- The music restarts and the game continues until all the children have received a prize.
Rock the Baby
- Instruct the children to move about, rocking their babies to sleep in time to the music. When the music stops, they must stand still. The last child to stop moving is out. The game continues in this manner until there is a winner, who receives a prize. The rest receive tokens.
Pour the Tea
- YOU WILL NEED (PER TEAM):
- 1 × plastic teacup with saucer
- 1 × plastic teapot
- 1 × empty bucket or similar container
- 1 × bucket filled with water (enough to pour a cup for each child in the team, and some more)
- Appoint one child in each team to act as the pourer, and have the rest stand in a line behind the empty bucket at a predetermined distance from the pourer. The first child in line must hold an empty teacup and saucer.
- On starter’s orders, the pourer fills the teapot with water from the full bucket, while the first child runs toward her, balancing the teacup on the saucer.
- The water must be poured into the teacup and the child must return to her team, trying not to spill. When she reaches her team, she must pour the water into the empty bucket before handing the cup and saucer to the next child in line, who then repeats the procedure.
- The game continues until each child has had a turn and the water in each team’s bucket is assessed to determine which contains the most water. The winning team receives a prize, the rest receive tokens.
