AN ENCOUNTER WITH THE ENDERMAN

My life in the world of Minecraft was going pretty well overall. Sure, I had encountered a few mobs, but I had escaped them without any real problems or consequences. After fashioning together enough tools and accumulating plenty of wood, I had managed to build a nice shelter with adequate furniture. In addition, I had taught myself to hunt, had got a garden to start growing, had met a few villagers that I had made trades with, had torches to provide light, and had enough food to eat. I was feeling pretty good about my new life. I knew what I needed to look out for and was pretty certain I had everything I needed to face any unexpected challenges.

After spending the day out and about exploring the lush forests near the place I had made my home, I was shocked to see something up ahead of me. As far as I knew, I was the only one that came out to this remote area of the world and what I was seeing did not resemble any of the monsters I had come up against in the past. It was a strange figure who was exceptionally tall and very thin with limbs that were unnaturally long. It was black as night. Since it was merely meandering along the path, it did not appear to pose any sort of threat to me. However, Just to be certain I quickly ducked behind a nearby tree.

As I slowly peered out from behind the large tree trunk, I realized that he was carrying a small block of dirt in his extremely long arms. Even though he was simply walking toward me while minding his own business, I started to get a strange vibe and become creeped out, though I could not really explain why. After all, he appeared to be completely ignoring my presence. In fact, I could not even be certain that he even knew I was there in the first place.

That is when it happened! The thing in front of me turned his head slightly in my direction and we made eye contact. As I looked into his blank eyes, he began to make an loud and unearthly screeching sound. Although he was trembling, he remained fixed in the same spot while he glared at me. For a full minute, I stood there frozen in fear. Then, I calmly picked up the bow and arrow I had been carrying in case I came across anything good to eat and fired at him. Just like that he was gone. No, I had not killed him. My arrow landed on the ground, as he had simply vanished right in front of my eyes. All that was left was a strange trail of purple particles that led behind the spot I was standing in to thick underbrush within the woods.

I whirled around in fear frantically looking for this strange creature. Dusk was settling in and it was getting more and more difficult to see around me. There was not a single sound in the forest except for the loud pounding of my own heart. What should I do and where had he gone? This was nothing like the mostly pesky mobs I had encountered in the past. I had a matter of seconds to make a difficult decision. In the end, I opted to make a mad dash back to my home, while hoping that I would not stumble back across this strange creature.

I made a break for it and there he was! He was directly in front of me, but that was not all! There were two others with him. I quickly switched directions and headed into the thickest part of the woods. I could hear them behind me as I tried desperately to decide what I should do. I heard a strange zzzppp sound and suddenly it was right on top of me attacking me again and again. Flailing my arms, I tried to knock him away. That is when it happened again. There was a loud, strange noise, and then he and his two friends were gone, leaving those strange purple particles behind. It happened just like that! One minute I was being attacked and then everything went quiet.

With no clue what to do, I headed to my left. I knew that the forest ended on a cliff that dropped down to the beach below. My only hope was that I could lead them over the edge, without going over with them. That is when it hit me! This strange creature was able to teleport himself away, so he would probably be able to save himself from going over the edge. My options were limited and I had a feeling that they would be back any minute.

I told myself to stop and think. The creatures had the ability to teleport themselves away when I lashed out at him directly. What about water or fire? Was there anything they could do in this situation? This might be my only shot. I knew there was a small lake about 50 feet away. Could I get there before they came back? I took off like a shot! Mere steps away from the water, they were back upon me, attacking me from every direction. I had no choice but to keep moving. After breaking free, I threw myself into the water and dove into the murky water below. I stayed below for as long as possible before I finally surfaced.

As I came up, I saw them on the bank of the lake. They were simply standing there looking at me. That’s when it hit me that they could probably not come into the water or they already would have. Treading water, I opted to stay there and see what happened. That is when I heard that strange noise again. I blinked quickly and they were gone!

I had to get home while I had the chance. I choose to swim across the lake to the other side and make a mad dash to my house from that side of the lake. I quickly and quietly scurried out of the water, still hanging on to my bow and arrow for dear life and took off. In just a few minutes, I had made it home without seeing these strange creatures again.

Later on I would find out that I had just had my first encounter with the infamous Enderman. When would I see them again? That is a question that I wish I knew the answer to.
