Now that you have a more in-depth understanding of how crafting works and how big a part of game progression it plays, you can finally get a good start on building your first shelter from the ground up. By this point, you should have some torches, a wooden door, and your stone tools to help you begin. Don’t forget to put torches both inside and outside your home--this way, the mobs can’t spawn in either location.
The easiest way to get building materials for your home would be to create a makeshift mine inside your house. A good way to start is to dig out some steps as you descend. Go down about 10 blocks or so and start building a hallway that will fit a door. You can expand it further once you’ve built an entrance, but make sure there’s an opening two blocks high and one block wide for the door. Be sure to keep your mine well-lit all the while, and check your inventory to see if you have a good deal of wood stocked up. You’re going to need it.
The Descent
To keep the flow of the game consistent and efficient, try making drift tunnels to keep navigation a breeze. Getting in and out will be much easier and less demanding on your resources, and a slight sideways slant in the drifts eliminates the need for ladders as you won’t be plunging straight down into danger.
As you keep mining, you may eventually find a layer of stone that you can’t break with your tools, no matter how hard you try. When you’ve hit this point, you’ll know that you’re at the very bottom of the mine, but don’t fret--this can work to your advantage! From here, you can make larger drifts and have easier access to valuable minerals like coal, iron, gold, and diamond. Always remember to have plenty of torches on hand so those stray Creepers can’t surprise you with an explosion!
