Epilogue:
As we sat in my office, Sally was pouring out more coffee as the TV on the wall displayed the many Grimshaw officers being removed from the various precincts they worked. Peter’s construction sites turned up about thirty kilos of Fentanyl in total. Rather than do consecutive life sentences, he sang like a canary and one of the names he dropped was his own brother’s.
Ron Grimshaw had managed to escape arrest and elude the authorities. He was on the run now, and I hoped he was more occupied with his continued freedom to make a pass at me or mine.
However, I was sleeping with one eye open, waiting incase he did choose to come after us.
Sally Anne was finally safe, and able to go pack up her entire life and move into a small condo. She was still spending a lot of time around Henry and me. I assumed not only for the company but also because we seemed to make her feel safe.
Shen was not pleased with the loss of all that product, but he would hardly speak openly of the drugs to me. He knew that he had danced with the devil on this deal and I burned him. He still covered our expenses and he seemed to accept the explanation and the massive arrests of all the cops and agents involved in the rip-ring.
Most of them were bond for protected custody because they were all marked men now. Shen would have every mutt on the inside who listened to him looking out for these mongrel former cops.
The truth that the Irish had contracted the rips was still hidden, and I hoped it would remain that way. My endgame was peace on the street and safety for the innocent. As it stood, it appeared that I was mostly successful.
What surprised me more than anything was the five-grand Sally Anne’s parents wired into our investigation firm’s account after hearing of our pro-bono case saving her life. I almost tried to return the money, but Henry decided it wise to use it to pay the bills before my good nature got the best of us both.
Henry was satisfied with the bump in clientele our periphery aid on this massively popular case had brought in as well. As far as anyone in the public knew, we simply helped Detective Katie Brown a bit in her case, but that was still enough to send us plenty of legit customers and a few crackpots as well.
“You know what we need?”
I asked them both and Henry and Sally both eyes me in question.
“A day at the dugout. Let’s go watch the Braves game today.”
I told them, and Henry rolled his eyes and Sally bobbed in agreement. Some good beer and good baseball could help a girl with many of her plethora of ailments. Hopefully, even help cure the broken heart surrounding Penny’s anger and ex-communication.
However, I was a PI now. I had to play by my own rules to survive in this city. Even if my blood still bled blue, I was no longer able to take the straight-forward approach that Katie and Penny could.
I am Gina Giles, and this is my Private Investigation firm, and we are here to stay, even if it means we are mixing things up in the thick of it in the process.
