“Remember I told you about growing up near a forest?” Dante said.
“This is it?” I asked.
“Yes. It’s the cabin me, Stefan and our mother lived in. I bought it a few years ago. It’s kind of a retreat. It’s where I come when I need to get away from things and think.”
“It’s beautiful,” I said, taking in the surroundings. If I was here under different circumstances, I know I would have been lost in a sense of wonder and joy.
“You told me it was a little cabin in the woods,” I said, looking around at the vaulted ceilings, the floor-to-ceiling windows, the wide, wraparound deck, and the luxurious furnishings. “I made some changes; an homage to my mother. She used to fantasize about how she would decorate this place if she had money.”
“Well if this is what she would have wanted, she had exquisite taste.”
“That she did,” he said, a faraway look in his green eyes. They were almost black; lost in remembrance of a happier time. I knew I would never forget the look on his face. A mix of peace and pain.
“Why did you bring me here Dante?”
