Davis, Richard Harding, The Cuban and Puerto Rican Campaigns (New York, 1898) Highly critical but excellent journalist’s first-hand account.

Feur, A.B., The Spanish-American War at Sea (Connecticut, 1995) Detailed naval account Teijerio, José Muller y, The Battle and Capitulation of Santiago de Cuba (Washington DC, 1898) A rare Spanish account published in English.

Nofi, Albert A., The Spanish–American War, 1898 (Pennsylvania, 1996) An excellent and concise account, with technical appendices and useful military information.

O’Toole, G.J.A., The Spanish War: An American Epic (New York, 1984) A competent general account.

Post, Charles J., The Little War of Private Post (New York, 1960) Revealing first-hand account by a soldier in the 71st New York Regiment, published by a descendant.

Roosevelt, Theodore, The Rough Riders (several editions) How ‘Teddy’ won the war single-handed. Famous for attacks on other participants.

Trask, David F., The War with Spain in 1898 (New York, 1981) Detailed modern history, emphasising diplomatic and political decisions.
