Chapter Five

image

Benny Chinsky parked his weather-beaten, dark blue, box van outside his next customer’s home. He popped on a flat cap to ward off the drizzle, and buttoned his peacoat before exiting to fetch his equipment from the back. While rounding the van he admired the big white lettering he'd painted—Shomer Security Systems.

It wasn’t the original name.

He liked the business, but the original name was a constant reminder how he inherited it.

Recalling his injury he absently touched his mangled ear—a permanent reminder of that drunken rage.

That night still haunted him.

He arrived home after his night shift at the mall to see the monster swinging a bat at his beloved adoptive mother.

She crumpled to the floor crying out in pain.

The monster turned toward him and wound up for a swing targeting his head.

He tried to wrestle the bat from the monster, but he failed, and took a forceful blow to his ear.

When it was over he took the monster’s security business van, and drove his adoptive mother as far away as he could.

Changing the business name at least made that part of it his own.

Moving from city to city meant starting over frequently. But their recent move to Chicago proved to be one of the better places they lived.

He was able to grow a clientele quickly here.

The Sopoynik Rebbe referred him to many customers, including this one.

He was amazed how helpful this community was, and how readily they were accepted.

Choosing to become a Sopoynik Chassid proved to be a very fortunate decision.

Business referrals were just one of many perks, as he liked to think of them.

Benny slammed the van’s cargo doors shut, slung his worn leather pouch over his shoulder, and headed to the front door.

He pressed the doorbell, and waited.

Nobody responded.

He pressed it again.

Still no response.

He pulled his cell phone from his peacoat pocket, and double-checked his Tuesday schedule.

He rapped on the door.

That resulted in a woman peering briefly through the window followed by the door swinging wide open.

Benny stepped inside.

The scent of her vanilla and rose perfume aroused him.

The woman peered outside before shutting the door.

Benny watched her bolt the door, and draw the curtain across the little window in the door. He noticed how all the windows in the home had their shades drawn.

The woman turned toward Benny revealing a tight skirt and pullover top that accentuated her shapely figure. The babushka loosely tied around her head allowed her silky red hair to dangle freely.

Benny’s elevator eyes lingered where they shouldn’t as he admired the sexy vixen before him. He flashed a knowing smirk.

She showed Benny to the motion sensor that had been peeping.

He skillfully removed the cover, and replaced the battery in record time.

He looked forward to the treat awaiting him.
