Acknowledgements

I must take this opportunity to thank the following for their advice, assistance, and support: Mary Devine (vice-president of the Newfoundland Historical Society [NHS] in the early 1980s); George Story (a past president of the NHS), and Gordon Handcock, who succeeded Mary Devine as NHS’s vice-president and the other members of the NHS executive. They all joined in sponsoring the Oral History Project. In addition, I thank the federal civil servants who administered the funds on behalf of the Canada Employment and Immigration Commission (CEIC): Calvin Smith and James Howard, and James Jamieson, who regularly audited the project. I also called upon Philip Hiscock, who was in charge of the Memorial University’s Folklore and Language Archives (MUNFLA), to give us seminars on the correct way to conduct oral history research. I also asked assistance from Diane Dawson, then senior secretary of the History Department, to perform a similar function in the use of computers, which were just beginning to replace typewriters. I must thank both individuals. I must also thank those who helped me in recent years to prepare this publication: Mekaela Mahoney, for her role in helping me organize the material; Fran Warren, administration officer of the History Department; Renee Clowe, secretary to the Head of the Department; and Dr. Iona Bulgin. And, last but not least, the various Heads of the History Department, including the most recent, Dr. Sean Cadigan, who have helped me to proceed smoothly with this work.
