Hypertrophy.
What a strange word! For me it conjures up images of a two-foot-tall brass statue pegged on top of a Christmas tree–sized wooden base.
“Congratulations! You won the golf tournament! Here’s your giant oversized cardboard check and a massive hypertrophy. You may need an Uber XL to get home.”
But it turns out the word hypertrophy has nothing to do with winning a giant prize and has everything to do with how muscles grow in your body.
When you hit the gym and lift heavier and heavier weights you feel that burn. Grunt, sweat, and push your muscles to their max. To their limit!
What’s happening on a microscopic level?
You are tearing your muscles. You are making tiny, tiny rips in the tissue.
Gives new meaning to the word shredded.
What’s the takeaway?
Well, those little tears, those little rips, those little microtraumas, sound dangerous, but when you’re resting the tissues repair which ultimately helps your muscles grow in size and strength.
Tiny rips. Tiny tears. Tiny failures.
Ultimately result in a stronger you.
Lose more to win more.
