CHAPTER 9

image

Sady ignored Matt as soon as she got texts from CJ, filling her in on details of the new job. Well, hot dang. So she would do more than answer phones and file papers. She was smiling while she texted and didn't see the wary look Matt sent her way. She hadn't pestered him with a single question.

Sady had her key ready when they approached the front door of her apartment. Before she could put it in the lock, Matt pushed her to the ground and shot out the solar light by her door as he landed next to her.

"Are you crazy?" Sady hissed. "What do you think you're doing?"

"I take it you didn't see the flash of the laser skimming the building?"

"No. I can't see anything and all I heard was the sound of my door light shattering. I'm going to get thrown out of here if you keep shooting up the place," she scolded.

"Shut up and stay put. And make sure your phone is in your pocket or your purse. I don't need it lighting up and giving away your position." He left before Sady could reply.

A few minutes later she heard footsteps, and she felt around in her bag. A flashlight passed over her face and Matt said, "They're gone. It may have just been some kids but I can't be sure."

When he saw the taser Amanda let her borrow he yelled, "What are doing with that thing? You don't even know how to use one, not to mention it's not legal for you to have it." He grabbed it from her before she could try it out on him.

"Fine. I'll buy a set of knives that fit conveniently in my bag. But don't lose that thing or you'll have to answer to Amanda."

"I should have known. When did you have time to get this thing?" he asked.

"Right before we went to the police station," Sady told him. "She brought it with her when she came to check on us earlier. Since she didn't need to use it she slipped it into my purse."

He choked and asked, "You took that thing into the police station?"

"Of course not. I left it under the seat in your car while we were at the station. Amanda warned me about when I should take it out of my bag. She was very specific about police stations, high security and government buildings... except the post office is okay."

Matt closed his eyes and asked for the key. Sady handed it up to him and he pulled her to feet then shoved her through the front door. As he checked her apartment, he closed the blinds and drapes. When he finished, he pulled out his cell phone.

"I'm taking a shower," Sady told him. His only acknowledgment was a wave of his hand, like he was shooing a fly.

When she disappeared into her room, he checked her text messages, then he made two phone calls. One to the Knight's and one to Sady's uncle. When Sady came out from her shower, he was sitting on the couch with a bottle of whiskey and a glass in front of him, rubbing his head like it hurt.

"Did you find out anything?" Sady was wearing a long oversize T-shirt that read, "Athlete of the Year, Hercules Gym."

He didn't answer but looked at her shirt with a raised brow.

"You don't believe it?" she asked, pretending to be hurt. Then with a smile she said, "You can get good deals at second-hand stores. When I'm finished being athlete of the year, I'll turn it into a rag. Now, did you find out anything?"

"Only that you are going to continue having me as a house guest. At least until we figure if you are still being targeted... and, if so, why." He drained his glass then poured more. "You've been here what... a week? And already you have people trying to kill you."

His phone buzzed with an incoming text message. He scowled and spent a few minutes texting, then he shook his head and turned his phone to silent mode. He set it on the coffee table and asked, "What- you don't have any ideas? How can you make enemies so fast?"

"You can make twenty enemies all at once when you are new to a pageant," she told him. "Not to mention the mamas, daddies, boyfriends, and managers who all hate you as well."

"Maybe, but they aren't likely going to shoot at you." He ignored the phone that kept lighting up with incoming texts.

"Aren't you going to answer that?" she asked. "It might be important."

"Not anymore," he assured her. Sady watched as the display continued flashing with incoming texts.

"I think it's swearing at you," she laughed.

"I'm sure you're right," he replied as he grabbed it off the table. He dialed a number and left a voice message. "I want a new phone number- NOW. And if you want me to do my job, that number will stay private."

Sady was frantically waving, and she mouthed "Tell him to get me a Mustang." He gave her a malicious smile and said, "Sady wants you to get her a Fiesta for her next car." He disconnected and rubbed his head again.

"Girlfriend trouble?" Sady asked.

He gave her a sharp look and the scowl on his face let her know she was right. "Feel free to give her a call," she offered trying not to smile. "What's her name again? Emily?"

"No, and it's none of your business. Now go get some sleep."

"Oh, yeah, right. I start my new job..." she said when he interrupted.

"Don't bother, Sady. I've read your texts and CJ came clean, so just do me a favor? Try not to get us killed, okay?"

"Fine, but I'm not driving a Fiesta. If one shows up in the parking lot, you are the one who will be driving it. So you might want to call him back and make sure it's a Mustang... and I might let you drive once in a while. Sweet dreams, Meadows."

A throw pillow hit the wall behind her as she made her way down the hall to her bedroom, and she heard him say, "Sassafras."

She yelled back before slamming her bedroom door. "Make sure he's knows I'm not picky. Any color of a Roush or a Shelby will do."
