JESUS IS BETRAYED BY JUDAS: MATTHEW 26:47-50
Artist statement: “Handed Over”
We use our hands to bless and wound, reject and serve, love and betray. In this self-portrait, I contemplate my own contradictions, seeing in the shadows my likeness to Judas and recognizing (with streaks and stains like tears) the ways I have handed myself over to greed, fear, and self-protection rather than handing myself over to love. What do you see?
While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him.” At once he came up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you are here to do.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. (Matthew 26:47-50)
► Let the scene play out like a short movie in your imagination. Which details catch your attention? Stir your thoughts, memories, or emotions? Why?
► Place yourself in the scene in Gethsemane. How do you respond when Judas approaches? What do you try to do? What do you wish Jesus would do? Why?
► The Greek word for “betray” (paradidomi) is the same word used for “hand over.” Bring to mind occasions when you have betrayed Jesus, others, or yourself and your principles. Recall moments when you have “handed yourself over” to sin.
● Is there anything for you to confess and receive grace for?
► Bring to mind occasions when you have been betrayed by a friend or loved one. What was that experience like for you?
● How does Jesus keep you company in this?
► Speak with God about what you have noticed during your time of reflection.
